"A Bookstore Guy"

Former Vice President Al Gore is in the middle of a campaign -- this time to promote the environmental message of his new book and documentary film, An Inconvenient Truth. And among his most recent stops were several independent bookstores -- Olsson's Books & Records Penn Quarter store in Washington, D.C.; Davis-Kidd Booksellers in Nashville, Tennessee; and Dutton's Beverly Hills Books in Beverly Hills.
Yup. This is us. It was an insane number of people but it was incident free.

Al was really gracious and the ever adorable Ginger Knight had it all under control. She didn't do it by herself but personal bias dictates that I must single her out. ;-)
Davis-Kidd marketing manager Ginger Knight reported a flawless, extremely popular event. "We were thrilled with the turnout. We had over 800 people here." Gore signed 750 of the 1,000 copies sold.

Never shop when hungry

We've all heard it, "never go to the grocery when hungry". Why? B/c you buy all sorts of crap you don't need or want.

Here are 16 other money saving tips:
1. Don’t shop for groceries if you’re hungry.
2. Shop with a list. Make a list and stick to it.
3. Choose a grocery store and learn its prices.
4. Buy in bulk, when possible.
5. Stock up on non-perishables.
6. If you do seasonal baking, stock up year round.
7. Know when to shop at big box stores.
8. Compare unit pricing.
9. Check your receipt.
10. Use coupons, but only to buy things you actually need (or want to try).
11. Use coupons for staple foods and ingredients, not highly-processed foods.
12. Take advantage of special coupons whenever possible.
13. For maximum savings, combine coupons with in-store sales.
14. Plan your meals around what’s on sale.
15. Examine sale flyers carefully.
16. Take advantage of “buy one, get one free” offers.
17. My wife’s final piece of advice? “Let your husband come with you for the company, but don’t let him put anything in the cart.” The experts agree.

South Africa will be a better measuring stick

I think this is a valid post about what we are looking toward for our US National Team.

We have some young players with experience, like DeMarcus & even Landon. We have some really young players with experience, like Clint, EJ & Gooch. South Africa 2010 should be good.

Test post

I am doing 43 things.

by Alejandro Escovedo

John Cale is one of Alejandro’s heros. It makes sense that if he offered to produce Al would let him.

I don’t like John Cale’s production. The songs are a mishmash of previously released and previously unreleased. The songs range from pretty good to really good. The production sounds like 80s arena rock (without the crazy guitars).

Al is back and you should catch him on tour where he & his songs ALWAYS shine bright.

(Sorry no details. It’s early and I don’t have the CD at hand.)

No Brainer

Yes, the US needs to get the offense started. They can't win if they don't score and they need to win!

I was proud of them against Italy. I liked their aggressiveness, I liked confidence. I liked their vision.

I didn't like their continued lack of shots. Where the hell is McBride? If they are gonna use the 4-5-1 they have to have at least two mids and one forward who will shoot. Where was Eddie Johnson?

Advertisers Advertising Advertisements

Tara got this in the mail recently and we both thought it was brilliant. Obviously it only works with certain people at certain times.

Tara had read enough about Closer to recognize that this was a marketing ploy. I probably wouldn't have figured it out that quickly.

Year 2

This time last year Tara and I were just married.

Now, depending on whether you go by day or date we were doing different things. On this date last year we were spending our wedding night in the lovely Hermitage Hotel. On this day last year we were on an American Airlines flight heading toward Madrid (Tara didn't know Granada was the final destination).

In honor of this weekend last year Tara and I went to Cumberland Mountain State Park.

For your viewing pleasure here are links to photos from last year:

Meet your new Presiding Bishop

We can't elect a gay bishop but we can put a woman in the highest post we have.

26th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

The Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, 51, was consecrated the ninth Bishop of Nevada on February 24, 2001.

She serves a diocese of some 6,000 members in 35 congregations.

Jefferts Schori is the first woman selected as a nominee for Presiding Bishop.

Her service to the wider church includes current membership on the Special Commission on the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion; the Board of Trustees, Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California; the CREDO Advisory Board; the House of Bishops peer coaching program; the General Board of Examining Chaplains; the Board for Church Deployment; the House of Bishops' Pastoral Development, Racism, and Planning Committees; the Court for Review of a Trial of a Bishop; the Episcopal visitor team for the Community of the Holy Spirit; and the Bishops of Small Dioceses group. From 2001-2003 she was a member of the 20/20 Strategy Group, and served as secretary of the House of Bishops Ministry Committee at the 2003 General Convention.

She is the author of "When Conflict and Hope Abound," Vestry Papers (March-April 2005); "Building Bridges/Widening Circles" in Preaching Through Holy Days and Holidays: Sermons that Work XI, Roger Alling and David J. She is an active, instrument-rated pilot with more than 500 hours logged. At the time of her election as bishop of Nevada, Jefferts Schori was assistant rector at the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan in Corvallis, Oregon, where she also served as pastoral associate, dean of the Good Samaritan School of Theology, and priest-in-charge, El Buen Samaritano, Corvallis. She was ordained deacon and priest in 1994. Prior to ordination, she was a visiting assistant professor at Oregon State University's Department of Religious Studies, a visiting scientist at Oregon State University's Department of Oceanography, and an oceanographer with the National Marine Fisheries Service in Seattle.

This looked a lot like the Morocco game a couple of weeks ago. The were unorganized and uninspired.

How to Extend the Life of Your Car

Yeah, I need to catch up on some of this.
  1. Change the oil regularly
  2. Change the air filter
  3. Flush the fluids every two years
  4. Flush the cooling system
  5. Monitor your brake pad thickness and don't let the pads wear down to metal
  6. Rotate the tires
  7. Keep the tires inflated
  8. Keep the front end aligned
  9. Get your car off to a good start every time you drive it
  10. Use your parking brake
  11. Wash your car

Note: If your user manual says it's best to let the car warm up a little first before forcing it to apply power to the wheels, it's best to follow it and do so; for as written several times before, the people who made it know best.

Buddhist Thought of the Day

In reply to the question, 'What is the best that people can possess, what brings them truest happiness, what is the sweetest of the sweet, and what is the pleasantest life to live?' the Buddha answered:

'Trust is the best that people can possess; following the way brings happiness; truth is the sweetest of the sweet; and the practice of insight is the pleasantest way to live.'
Sutta Nipata
