Phish

I saw a Phish Halloween show...it was the 96 show " Remain in Light " by Talking Heads . I went with my friend Kevin and the seats sucked. It was the Omni and we were at the top - no tapers tickets for me for that show. The excitement was energizing. Everybody was guessing which album there would be. Then we got inside and they gave out handbills, like the Broadway type, and not being a big Talking Heads fan I didn't understand the cover photo (Remain in Light with Phich members instead of Talking Heads). We trudged our way up and up and up some more. We squeezed into the seats - they are much smaller when you are that high up and I filled Kevin in on the show. He'd never been to one of these type shows (3 sets, etc). So an hour or so later Remain in Light begins and it was intense. I didn't know they album so I didn't know what was going on. I remember being excited to see El Buho , who'd I'd gotten to know in Nashville and I remember thinking how ...

Welcome Dirty Hippies!

Actually, I guess Bonnaroo isn't as much a hippie fest as it used to be. With the addition of extra tents (Comedy and Jazz, maybe more) it's more like New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest North. And by being a former dirty hippie I can call them that. Have fun, be careful and remember Manchester loves you so be nice.

Don't you just love the end of the school year.

I am at the downtown library...the Main Library of Nashville. It's a huge space with all sorts of architectural interests. Needless to say we get lots of field trips this time of year. The excitement the kids bring can be quite fun but today we are being treated to a performance by Student Competition Winner Violin & Viola Players and how wonderful. You have to see our lobby to understand but acoustically it's beatiful for something like this, a big open space with the performer on the balcony. Nashville can be a great place.

Project Z - Pure Madness

I love these guys. The first jamband I heard or saw was Col. Bruce and Aquarium Rescue Unit which featured Jeff Sipe (drums) and Jimmy Herring (guitar), both featured here. Ricky Keller , the bassist here, was also the conductor of the Zambiland Orchestra which I went to see each Christmas season for several years, it was the most amazing musical experience you could ask for...multiples of every instrument, ensembles melding into other ensembles, audience participation, and a deep love of music and people.

Made My Day

Over the past couple of days I've heard news reports about Wolfgang's Vault , this online store filled with Bill Graham Presents... memorabilia. The guy who runs it is in trouble b/c he apparently is using images in unauthorized ways...making coffee mugs with poster images and whatnot. My good friend Kevin dropped me an email about it and he decided to check the place out. See, not only does they website have all this stuff but they stream concerts from the vaults and that is what has made my day. I am listening to Albert King , 27Jun1971 from the Fillmore East . Oh my fucking GOD! His power, his style, his voices...throat and guitar. Sign up and check out some incredible live music ( Stevie Wonder , Jimi Hendrix , Madonna , Zappa , Tracy Chapman , U2 , etc) Technorati Tags: classic rock , live music , fillmore , bill graham , albert King powered by performancing firefox

Greatest Record Store on the planet!

Grimey's . It's the kind of place to drive people like Tara crazy but I and my record store junkie friends love rummaging through the bins of CDs, LPs and whatever else. If you have to walk over some CD boxes so be it, if you have to move a stack of CDs to get to another stack so be it, you just soak it all in. Not to mention events like: Robert Randolph Listening Party – Tuesday, October 10 @ Noon Join us at noon on a Tuesday for a lunchtime listening party for the new CD from Robert Randolph & The Family Band – Colorblind. It delves even deeper into a Sly Stone / Stevie Wonder funk bag and features guests Dave Matthews and Eric Clapton , but Randolph’s sacred steel stylings are the real show. We’ve got a boatload of hot wings from Mojo Grill on tap, plus some drinks and additional snacks. Skip out for lunch and we’ll feed you while we rock out to Colorblind. The new CD will be on sale and we’ll have some prizes and give-aways as well to sweeten the pot. HOWARD TATE...
