A new day

This morning I accepted the challenge of participating in a program that will attempt to help me live a better life. Bonnie told me a few months ago that a friend of hers was participating and liked it. Bonnie thought it would be helpful for me. See, I am a drug addict , no no that's not it. I mean to say I have hypertension . I am medicated for it and have been for close to a decade. Although there were some lifestyle changes as soon as Tara & I got serious - less beer consumption, less eating at places like TGI Friday's - more are needed. I don't get enough sleep, I can't stay motivated on any kind of exercise routine. I walk a little and go to the YMCA periodically. So I have decided to participate in the grant funded program at Center for Lifestyle and Health Management . Today was orientation and I was assigned to a mentor as well as given a date (3/6) for my labs and first consult. For the first 6-10 weeks I will at least speak with my mentor once a week an...

If exercise makes you happy...

...why don't more people do it? Why don't I want to do it? My wife exercises all the time. I have a membership to the YMCA . My doctor says I should exercise . My dog needs exercise and now I read this article that implies if I exercise I will become a CEO. Most CEOs exercise regularly, so you could say that regular exercise is important to getting that top job. Now, I don't have designs on being a CEO but I know I need to move. My current job has strapped me to a desk. I walk to and from the busstop and that's about it. That's about 1/2 mile total walking. I need to do something. I hate going to the gym and I make excuses about why I don't ride my bike. What can I do?

10 unconvential Diet Tips

While at Davis-Kidd I lost close to 30 lbs. Five years of a day job had killed my waistline. One year at Davis-Kidd, running up and down two flights of stairs a thousand times a day...well, that'll take some weight off. Now that I'm back at a desk job, the weight is returning and it sucks. The day job allows me more hours at night to spend with Tara but if I workout at night, I will once again lose time with her. Morning workouts, which require me to get up earlier, are, of course, out of the question. So, what do I do? My answer is...whatever I can. I ran across this article from lifehack.org somewhere. Buy a digital scale Weigh yourself everyday Drink 8 glasses of water everyday Make your diet public Don’t diet on the weekends Don’t sacrifice your life for your diet If I didn’t diet on Tuesday, for example, I would diet on Saturday, instead. Make the small changes Rather than giving up what most diets say you should give up (soda, coffee, beer, caffeine, etc.) just make he...

8 ways to exercise your brain

Who doesn't want to be smarter? Who doesn't want their smarts to last as longs as they do? Apparently their are 8 things you can do to help: 1. PLAY HEAD GAMES Brain games may help improve mental function, and could possibly help prevent dementia. 2. TRAIN YOUR BRAIN The training exercises included: -Memory: To help people memorize word lists, one method was to organize a grocery list by the sections of the store, said Marsiske, an associate professor in the department of clinical health and psychology at the University of Florida. -Visualization: Use all your senses to remember things. For example, if you need to remember a dog's name, visualize what the dog's fur feels like, recall the sound of its bark, and, yes, try to re-create its smell. -Reasoning: Participants learned to use highlighters to identify key points in complicated information. That included underlining important information like dosage and frequency on a medication. 3. TAXES 4. BUILD YOUR "COGNI...
