25 Ways to Save the Planet: 6 - 10

25 Ways to Save the Planet: 6 - 10 (Collin Dunn):

Part four out of our five-part series has more easy, affordable things you can do by the end of the day today to make a positive impact on our planet.

10) Make your own frugal flusher.
9) Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents.
8) You can't beat filtered tap water in a reusable bottle.
7) Go for a potted plants. They last longer, improve indoor air quality and can even be self-watering. If cut flowers are a must, go for organic and look for the Veliflora sustainable floral label.
6) A low-flow showerhead can save you gallons of water each time you use it.

25 Ways to Save the Planet: 11 - 15

25 Ways to Save the Planet: 11 - 15 (Collin Dunn):

In part three of our ongoing series, we bring you five more ideas for ways to reduce your ecological impact, keep things green, and save some green by increasing efficiency while retaining function.

15) Fill your kitchen with bamboo.
14) Get an efficient space heater to cut down on the cubic area you need to heat, reducing energy consumption and energy bills.
13) If a drying rack or clothing line doesn't make sense for your wet laundry, a spinning clothes dryer that uses centrifugal force is a much more efficient alternative to conventional clothes dryers.
12) Use recycled paper.
11) Many of us can't afford to get sustainable hardwood flooring, bamboo flooring or really cool reclaimed lumber flooring, but we can still make a difference with the rugs and carpets we put down.

Buddhist Thought of the Day

Try to be reasonable in the way you grow, and don't ever think it is too late. It is never too late. Even if you are going to die tomorrow, keep yourself straight and clear and be a happy human being today. If you keep your situation happy day by day, you will eventually reach the greatest happiness of enlightenment.

25 Ways to Save the Planet 15-20

TreeHugger believes that if everyone comes together to make a couple of small changes, we can make a big difference.

20. Eschew air conditioners and go with a ceiling fan for year-round climate control.
19. Skip the energy-hogging clothes dryer for a drying rack or clothes line instead.
18. Use rechargable batteries instead of single-use batteries.
17. If given the choice, go for organic fruits, veggies, meat and dairy over conventional food.
16. When it comes to food, the only thing making more noise these days than organic is the local food movement.

25 Ways to Save the Planet

From Treehugger:

25 Ways to Save the Planet (Collin Dunn):

Earth Day is great; it's a wonderful opportunity for millions of people around the world to take action to help save our delicate planet; the only bummer is that it's only one day each year. With the big day squarely in our collective rear-view mirror, but still fresh in our minds, now is a good time to mention our favorite ways to make every day a little bit more like Earth Day.

We'll see 5 per day...

25) Get a reel (human-powered) lawn mower.
24) Compost your garbage instead of throwing it all away.
23) Buy clothes and other linens made from organic cotton.
22) Ride a bicycle.
21) Use eco-friendly household cleaners.

Do you believe?

United States moves up to fourth

How is this possible? They got stomped by Germany and tied Jamaica, how do you move up in the rankings when you get those types of results?

1 Brazil
2 Czech Rep.
3 Netherlands
4 USA +1
5 Spain +1
6 Mexico +1
7 France +1
8 Portugal +2
8 Argentina -4
10 England -1

I love these too:
Palestine, which moved up 17 places last month, picked up another six places this time to go into 115th place with 387 points. Tajikistan moved up 16 spots to 125th, and Kyrgyzstan moved up 13 places to 146th.

End of the world as we know it.

Wal-Mart Making Real Changes

...changes in Wal-Mart's strategy aimed at getting existing customers to buy more products by offering trendier and better quality items. Other steps include better tailoring stores to their surrounding communities and taking a leading environmental role in reducing waste and greenhouse gases.

If every Wal-Mart customer bought one efficient bulb, it would save U.S. consumers $3 billion in utility bills.

Lightning rod for criticism over a war

Generals demand Rumsfeld's resignation

Six retired generals have now called for Rumsfeld to step down, including two who spoke out on Thursday.

"I really believe that we need a new secretary of defense because Secretary Rumsfeld carries way too much baggage with him," said retired Maj. Gen. Charles Swannack, who led the Army's 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq.

Finally good Republicans think Bush is an idiot

I've seen several books come through the store recently along these lines. Long-time, well-respected Republicans and Conservatives have finally figured out that George Bush is running the country like he ran the Texas Rangers (and everything else he's been the head of)! For those who don't remember...he ran them into the ground.

You've got Francis Fukuyama: America at the Crossroads, Bruce Bartlett: Imposter, Kevin Phillips: American Theocracy, and now Newt Gingrich:

"Where I fault the administration is, sometimes it would be so easy to just be simple and straight, OK? All they had to do is go to the American people and say, we want to make sure that if the National Security Agency picks up a foreign terrorist calling someone in the U.S., that they can listen to the call," Mr. Gingrich said in a video clip posted on the South Dakota newspaper's website. He said more than 90 percent of Americans would have quickly endorsed such a program.

One way minorities break stereotypes is...

by acting against them.

Here is a provocative article about race and what it means to "be" an ethnic minority in this predominantly white society.

I've struggled with this since I was a teenager. I went to predominantly white schools which lead to mostly white friends and "white" interests. For a long time, and even now, I would alternately b/t being proud to be the only black face at something b/c it meant I wasn't conforming to what I should be doing and worrying that I wasn't "Black enough". Somewhere along the lines I _learned_ decided that I was who I was was and I didn't need to justify. It can still be tough because I am quite often seen as disappointingly "not black enough" from Blacks (this is usually some nonverbal communication; a roll of the eyes or something) and surprisingly "not black enough" from Whites (I've never met a black person who _________).

Anyway...check out Acting Your Race

Buddhist Thought of the Day

Clearly, buddha-dharma is not practiced for one's own sake, and even less for the sake of fame and profit. Just for the sake of buddha-dharma you should practice it.

All buddhas' compassion and sympathy for sentient beings are neither for their own sake nor for the sake of others. It is just the nature of buddha-dharma.

Would President Bush go to war to stop Tehran from getting the bomb?

Is it possible we would do something this stupid. I understand they gov't has to plan for all possiblities but we wouldn't REALLY pursue this course of action, would we? I mean, Condi has assured us that we wouldn't do something like this.

The Bush Administration, while publicly advocating diplomacy in order to stop Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapon, has increased clandestine activities inside Iran and intensified planning for a possible major air attack.

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "Thunderbird"

by Cassandra Wilson

This woman melts me.

I can’t hear Cassandra Wilson without thinking I would forsake house and home to spend time with her. She’s sexy; in a mature, worldly way – a way that makes you think know that she will take care of you when you need it and teach you when you need it, like Gaia, the mother of us all.

It’s not just her voice, with that hint of a lisp, it’s the relaxed delivery and it’s the oddly timed phrasing. She is style.

She is also smart. Her song choice is the best in music. Her ability to find the classics that will showcase her skills is impeccable. Thunderbird is actually filled with her own compositions and I haven’t gotten to them yet, I am still mesmerized by her voice – as I am with every album she release. This album is produced by T-Bone Burnett who has proven his ability to respect the song and the artist. Can I add Jim Keltner, Colin Linden, & Mark Ribot? If you understand what those names mean you know that’s all I have to say.

Buddhist Thought of the Day

It is not by the amount that giving is productive of reward but rather by the generous impulse behind it. Therefore even so little as a handful of rice flour given with a pure heart becomes something that will bring great reward.

Buddhist Thought of the Day

All that we are is the result of our thoughts; it is founded on our thoughts and made up of our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world. If you speak or act with a harmful thought, trouble will follow you as the wheel follows the ox that draws the cart.

All that we are is the result of our thoughts; it is founded on our thoughts and made up of our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world. If you speak or act with a harmonious thought, happiness will follow you as your own shadow, never leaving you.

Dear loyal Grimey's customers and supporters

PLEASE READ...this is so important to us.

Dear loyal Grimey's customers and supporters,

Unfortunately, we have experienced a significant increase in theft recently. That totally sucks. We want more than anything to trust our customers and make your shopping experience as pleasant as possible. If we approach you more often to ask if you need help, please don't take offense. We are just trying to increase our presence in the store and prevent would-be thieves from feeling anonymous. That's what emboldens them to rip us off – when they think we don't even notice them.

We would like to make an offer to our trusted customers to enlist you in helping us curb this problem – IF YOU SEE ANYONE ATTEMPTING TO STEAL OR CONCEAL MERCHANDISE AND YOU GIVE US A TIP THAT LEADS TO US CATCHING THE THIEF, WE WILL REWARD YOU WITH A $25 GIFT CERTIFICATE! We will be discreet and will make sure you are not involved or pointed out to the thief. All we ask is that if you see suspicious activity, please bring it to the attention of a Grimey's staffer and we'll take it from there. If we catch a shoplifter from your tip, you get $25 worth of free merchandise.

If you are one of the thieving bastards reading this, be sure WE WILL PROSECUTE YOU TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ALLOWABLE BY LAW. We have lawyers and our staff has years and years of experience testifying in shoplifting cases and we will not back down – NO EXCEPTIONS. In addition to the prosecution, you will be banned for life from Grimey's.

Thanks for your attention and believe us, WE LOVE OUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS! We appreciate you.
