A story about "Never Drank the Kool-Aid : Essays"

by Toure

Toure is my hero, actually he’s one of many.

This is the guy I would like to be and in many ways already am. He is New York and hip-hop which is ok; it’s not me and I don’t want it to be.

He and I are open-minded and educated. We are well rounded and well read.

He dresses like the hip-hop rock star he is and I’d like to be. He knows how to write which I am still learning.

Check this book out. It’s fun and informative. It will help you navigate the world of pop culture.

Buddhist Thought of the Day

In my own experience, the period of greatest gain in knowledge and experience is the most difficult period in one's life. ...Through a difficult period, you can learn, you can develop inner strength, determination, and courage to face the problem. Who gives you this chance? Your enemy.

Very Cool!

First Solar-Powered Recording Studio (warren):

According to Synthtopia, The Premises has just finished a three year long project to refurbish their suite of 14 recording studios in time for the business's 21st birthday party (on June 30th). The one which piques our interest is Studio A. Apparently it's the first fully professional solar powered recording studio in the UK. It was built using recycled materials where this was possible, and the electronics right down to the air conditioning is adapted to managing with a low energy demand.

Ronaldo And Red Bull Done Deal?

Less than a week ago Ronaldo told the Spanish daily Marca that he preferred to go to some place "less stressful" for the next season.

Red Bull is committed to dramatically upgrading this team, and that means bringing the best players in the world to New York," said Red Bull New York President and General Manager Alexi Lalas to "If Ronaldo is such a player, then you can bet he's a target.

So one of my most beloved musicians, Alejandro Escovedo, is in town tonight but budgetary restraints and the desire to spend time with my wife dictate that I wouldn't go to the show. I thought that would be ok b/c I could listen and possibly record off the internet. Well...WRLT-FM doesn't stream over the net!

I have no way of recording off the radio; my home theater receiver doesn't get reception and the one boom box in the house doesn't work right. So I am stuck listening to it on the little radio in the kitchen...

Why don't I have a day job? A job that leaves my entire weekend free!

Buddhist Thought of the Day

Ananda said:

Friendship with what is lovely, association with what is lovely, intimacy with what is lovely--that is half of the holy life.

The Buddha responded:

Don't say that, Ananda. It's the whole not the half of the holy life. One so blessed with what is lovely will develop a right way of being, a thinking that no longer grasps at what is untrue, an aim that is concerned and ready, a contemplation that is unattached and free. Association with what is lovely is the whole of the holy life.

Champions League Final: Barcelona 2, Arsenal 1

"I don't know if the ref had a Barcelona shirt on or something," [Thierry] Henry said. "If they don't want us to win it, just say it right from the start. I don't think he cost us the final, because we were 1-nil up. I always expect the ref to do his job. I don't think he did."

Governor's decision unprecedented in Tennessee

Gov. Phil Bredesen's 15-day reprieve for convicted killer Sedley Alley is unprecedented in Tennessee, making it difficult Tuesday night to determine when an execution date would be re-scheduled.

The Gov was in the store last week and he looked like something very heavy was weighing on his mind. He was sitting in our cafe alone with a very thoughtful, worried look on his face. I can only imagine what he was thinking about.

It's Getting Harder to Hate Wal-Mart

The world is going to hell when you start to see something good in Wal-Mart. Still won't be shopping there, so there. ;-p

It's Getting Harder to Hate Wal-Mart:

Whether or not we shop there, we all feel the Wal-Mart Effect as it changes the way everyone buys and everyone sells. We don't shop there, and we also just read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, which demolishes any belief in the idea that big organic is any better than big industrial food production, so we are not particularly concerned about Wal-marts entry into this market.

What's going on? Is this for real or greenwashing? Can we reconcile it with our world view of Wal-Mart as a union-busting, supplier-abusing, smalltown-destroying behemoth?

It's all true

Granted this came from a kid but I just heard someone say that an autobiography was all true and it was more clear b/c it goes from the subject "to the people" with nobody to mess it up.
Obviously he doesn't know about Million Little Pieces.

This is news

I watched most of the cup match and it was pretty amazing how well Sevilla played. It was a great game to watch until the last 20min when Sevilla chewed up and spit out Middlesborough!

Kepa Blanco's 76th-minute header goal helped Sevilla defeat depleted Spanish champion FC Barcelona 3-2 on Saturday and cap a historic week for the newly crowned UEFA Cup winner.

A good motivation is what is needed: compassion without dogmatism, without complicated philosophy; just understanding that others are human brothers and sisters and respecting their human rights and dignities. That we humans can help each other is one of our unique human capacities.

Buddhist Thought of the Day

Don't cling to anything and don't reject anything. Let come what comes, and accommodate yourself to that, whatever it is. If good mental images arise, that is fine. If bad mental images arise, that is fine, too. Look on all of it as equal, and make yourself comfortable with whatever happens. Don't fight with what you experience, just observe it all mindfully.

The Great Experiment

Davis-Kidd has a play area in its kid's room. The main attraction is the Thomas & Friends train, a completely laid out train set for the 1-4 age group. The standard scenario is kids play and nannies watch.
What I find most interesting is when the parents actually accompany the kids and work on the socializing skills. I mentioned earlier that you usually see the kids and their nannies, so you can guess what income level I am seeing. I guess what I find interesting is the way some parents talk to their children, treating their 2 year-olds as adults with little or no physical interaction (pointing and saying "give that back" or "share please").
I don't know, I guess there are lots of ways to do it but I find this as lazy and impersonal.
At least these customers are interacting as opposed to the ones who let their kids run around the kids room w/o any supervision.
Just an observation and an out loud wonder of how I will interact with my kid(s).

Shakespeare Festival nabs grant

This is one of the coolest things Nashville has to offer but I think it suffers from sporadic creative direction. One problem is they sometimes try to reinterpret Shakespeare to a different era without changing the Elizabethan English and to me, that's silly.

Beasley experiences racism firsthand

I'm glad to hear this story. I wondered what it was like for Demarcus, one of my fav players.

Beasley experiences racism firsthand:

"When he comes into camp now, he's more vocal, he's more of a leader, he's more demanding, he's more aggressive," said U.S. teammate Landon Donovan, who has known Beasley for nearly a decade. "He's turned into what Bruce has called a real soccer player."
