Buddhist Thought of the Day

Guard against anger erupting in body; in body, be restrained.Having abandoned bodily misconduct, live conducting yourself well in body.Guard against anger erupting in speech; in speech, be restrained.Having abandoned verbal misconduct, live conducting yourself well in speech. Whole Foods to the Rescue

In addition to buying more from smaller growers, Whole Foods plans to: -- Give $10 million a year in low-interest loans to help small, local farmers and producers of grass-fed and humanely raised meat, poultry and dairy animals. -- Raise its standards of humane care for the animals who supply meat, eggs and dairy to the stores. Whole Foods has hired an "animal compassionate field buyer" to work with producers to ensure that they meet the standards. -- Set up Sunday farmers' markets in the parking lots of some Whole Foods stores, including about 10 in Northern California. the article: Whole Foods, taking flak, thinks local

Small-Mart Revolution

I have been talking about this for so long...support your independent retailers! I don't care if it is a restaurant, bookstore, hardware store or otherwise; we have to support the little guys. This goes for food too. BUY LOCAL! Can 'Small-Mart' Replace Wal-Mart? Technorati Tags: green , eco-friendly , socially conscious

I'll bet it's stress...

Over the past week or so I have had these random back pains. Actually, it hasn't been a week yet. They first appeared at my family reunion last weekend (pictures to be posted soon). I woke up from night one and my entire back hurt but a few hours later it was better and I chalked it up to a bad bed. The next morning I woke up with a far more acute, more painful sensation that took about a day and a half to go away. It started to feel like a pinched nerve but then it was gone. Yesterday I had a job interview and a stressed wife (first day of school) and the pain returned. More immediately, I had a conversation with a couple of intense customers in a row as well as a phone conversation and now the pain from yesterday is back and pretty severe. A few years ago a massuese (sp?) told me that I had the tightest back she'd ever worked on...I know understand the full scope of what she said. ouch.

Evolved Consciousness

I've been studying Buddhism for a few years now and it continues to make more sense than Christianity. I think b/c the only expectations are to yourself; you make your like what it is, you make your next life what it will be. You do this by doing the right things or the wrong things on a daily basis. Below are Ten Benchmarks of an Evolved Consciousness . 1. Live in ways that enable all other people to live as well... 2. Live in ways that respect the lives of others... 3. Live in ways that safeguard the intrinsic right to living... for all the things that live and grow on Earth. 4. Pursue happiness, freedom, and personal fulfillment in harmony with the integrity of nature... 5. Require that your government relate to other nations and peoples peacefully and in a spirit of cooperation... 6. Require business enterprises to accept responsibility for all their stakeholders as well as for the sustainability of their environment... 7. Require public media to provide a constant stream of re...

New Layout

What does everybody think about the new layout? Tara liked the contrast of the blue and white better than the tone on tone thing I've got going on now. What's the consensus?

This about sums it up...

Zidane, a god?

Roger Cohen wrote a wonderful article about the head-but. He quotes a commentor from his blog . Jessica wrote from the United States: Two minutes before his fall from grace I was sure he was going to go down in history as a man full of honour, grace and control and take his place with the greats. And then he re-wrote his own destiny. But his actions also made me love him more. Before he was a god. But then he showed us all that he was just a man. A man with weakness and hate. She concluded: I am much more affected by him than I would have been had things gone as I hoped. But, my Lord, was that head butt sexy. Technorati Tags: zidane , world cup , soccer

To continue from last night

I was reading a book recently, War of Art , that made dealing with procrastination so easy. The book states that resistence is what stands between productive, creative lives and non-productive, uncreative lives. To deal with resistence you must become a "professional" and a pro wouldn't let resistence get the better of him/her. Don't I wish it was it was that easy. Married Life

Today Tara and I were discussing something and I stated to her that I am a procrastinator. She knows this and we have discussed it before but today was the first time I actually identified how difficult it is to be one. On any given day I don't know if, when or what will compel me to accomplish something and it sucks! I would love to be able to get up tomorrow and say; "today I will finish this or that" but I can't. Tara doesn't understand...she is so action oriented. I keep working on it and hopefully she will maintain some patience with me. OK, now I need a beer! Serie A-

The hammer fell in Rome and I guess I'll be watching some Serie A & B games this year. An Italian sports tribunal demoted Juventus to Serie B and stripped it of its last two Serie A titles on Friday. Lazio and Fiorentina also were demoted to the second division, while AC Milan was spared relegation but was given a 15-point penalty in the top division and will not play in European tournaments this season. Buddhist Thought of the Day

Drink deeply. Live in serenity and joy. The wise person delights in the truth And follows the law of the awakened. The farmer channels water to his land. The fletcher whittles his arrows. And the carpenter turns his wood. So the wise direct their mind. Dhammapada, translated by Thomas Byrom Technorati Tags: buddhism , daily meditation

Klinsmann steps down

This is a big surprise to me. I figured since the WC was such a success and the Germans did as well as they did that his contract would be extended. FIFA Rankings

Brazil is still #1 but everybody else... The U.S. and Mexico were two of the biggest losers. The United States, knocked out in the first round of the World Cup, dropped 11 places. Mexico, which reached the second round, fell from No. 4 to 18. Technorati Tags: fifa , soccer , rankings

Everywhere, truly, those of integrity stand apart. They, the good, don't chatter in hopes of favor or gains. When touched now by pleasure, now pain, the wise give no sign of high or low. The Paste 100 Greatest Living Songwriters

I meant to say something about this the other day. I heard most of the NPR Podcast and like most of the panel I thought this was a very strange list. The Paste top 10: 10. Prince 9. Joni Mitchell 8. Elvis Costello 7. Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) 6. Leonard Cohen 5. Paul McCartney (The Beatles, Wings) 4. Tom Waits & Kathleen Brennan 3. Bruce Springsteen 2. Find a friend to be with and stay in that relationship, avoiding the dangers of hurting others. Stay with your friend and become mindful and joyful. If you can find no friend, then go on by yourself. "...split him in two and smack him in the head."

"At breakfast in the hotel this morning, Wayne said he would split him in two and smack him in the head. Who can blame him?" the source told The Sun . "He is determined to settle the score in his own way and there is nothing anyone can do about it." As much as Rooney is a hothead (AND DESERVED the card) you can't blame him for feeling this way but this kind of comment is a great way to get fined and suspended...especially if something happens. Buddhist Thought of the Day

Feelings, whether of compassion or irritation, should be welcomed, recognized, and treated on an absolutely equal basis; because both are ourselves. The tangerine I am eating is me. The mustard greens I am planting are me. I plant with all my heart and mind. I clean this teapot with the kind of attention I would have were I giving the baby Buddha or Jesus a bath. Nothing should be treated more carefully than anything else. In mindfulness, compassion, irritation, mustard green plant, and teapot are all sacred.
