Jimmy Smith Dies
This was announced yesterday but I didn't hear about it until today. Jimmy Smith is one of my favorite musicians. He like Charlie Christian took a rhythm instrument and brought it to the front of the stage. The Hammond organ is one of the coolest sounding instruments around and Jimmy Smith turned it into one of the defining instruments of soul. His Blue Note albums are some of the most fun and coolest albums of the period. Because of Jimmy we have Soul-Jazz. His influence continues through the Beastie Boys (they used his song Root Down as the basis of one of their own), Soulive (they even where suits on stage), and of course, the straight jazzers like Joey DeFrancesco.
I'll be putting on some serious B3 music this weekend!
